Book store owner and historian, John Alexander, recounts the circumstances leading up to the gun battle on October 12, 1898, between mine guards for the Chicago-Virden Coal Company and UMWA members who were locked out of their jobs. His perspective is of one who has spent their life in Virden and studied what actually happened there.
